East Whittier City School District is proud to announce that Leffingwell Elementary and Ocean View Elementary have been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S Department of Education.
“We could not be more proud of this incredible accomplishment. This honor is a testament to the world class education we provide to all students here at EWCSD,” Superintendent Marc Patterson said.
Earning the National Blue Ribbon distinction is a prestigious honor and is a reflection of our schools’ ability to demonstrate academic excellence and close achievement gaps. The National Blue Ribbon distinction, which has been awarded nationwide since 1982, is considered the highest honor a public school can achieve.
“Ocean View is a special place to learn, and receiving the 2023 National Blue Ribbon recognition affirms that,” Ocean View Principal Kim Songer said. “It is inspiring to work with educators and families who are dedicated to fostering academic excellence and building positive school cultures that support all students at Ocean View.”
This year, a total of 353 schools across 46 states were recognized nationwide as Blue Ribbon Schools. In California, 33 schools received the honor.
To celebrate this remarkable achievement, both schools will receive a plaque and a National Blue Ribbon School flag, which they will display on their campuses to commemorate their commitment to academic success.
“What a tremendous honor it is to be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a national example of an exemplary school,” Leffingwell Principal Dr. Scott Blackwell said. “Our staff works so hard each day to make school fun and engaging while maintaining high rigorous expectations for all students.”
This prestigious honor would not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of the students, teachers, and families. Their collaborative efforts have created a high standard for success that empowers students to excel academically and become 21st century learners.
"National Blue Ribbon recognition exemplifies the validated academic success that our students and staff have earned,” EWCSD Board of Education President Armando Urteaga said. “On behalf of the Board of Education, I am incredibly proud of this national recognition for Leffingwell and Ocean View Elementary Schools. Through the determination of students, the nurturing of families, and our knowledgeable and compassionate staff, EWCSD continues to soar towards academic achievement."
