Principal's Message

“When parents and teachers collaborate on behalf of children, they create windows of light for the generations that follow.”

Welcome to La Colima. We look forward to an exciting new school year working with your children and are glad you are here! Our distinguished staff of teachers and support personnel is dedicated to providing every child with the best educational opportunity possible.

An old African proverb says, “It takes a whole village to raise a child.” While we no longer live in villages, this proverb still holds true. Educating our children requires that we all work together - not for our single issues, but for our greater good which is represented in our children. Children are our future - our collective survival depends on how well we nurture, love, educate and care for them. Your active support and cooperation, combined with our best professional efforts, will help to ensure a successful year for your child.

Remember that although attendance may not be a guarantor of success in school, it is certainly a prerequisite. Attendance is a critical factor to your child’s success in school. Make your child’s education your #1 priority. Get him/her to school every day on time. Schedule other things around the school day and wait for vacation and holidays to take trips or go places.

Students who are tardy miss out on valuable instruction and disrupt the learning of students who do get to school on time. It is difficult for students and teachers to make up for any time missed out of the classroom. Learning opportunities are lost. It is the parents’ responsibility to get their children to school on time.

In an effort to save money and trees, the Parent Handbook is available at the La Colima website. If you would like to receive a copy, please feel free to come to the office and request one.

Parents often ask what they can do to help. Listed below are several important suggestions.

  • Talk to your child. The more words he uses naturally in his ordinary conversation, the more words will have meaning for him when he sees them in print.
  • Listen to your child. Encourage your child to talk about things he has seen or done.
  • Read to your child. Every time you read to him, you are building an appreciation of books and reading.
  • Take him on trips. Even a short trip walking or on the bus will excite his curiosity and interest in the world around him. Point out interesting things and give him new words and meaning of words.
  • Introduce your child to the library. Let him choose the books that interest him.
  • Praise your child’s effort. Be specific and sincere.
  • Keep your child well rested. Elementary age children need 10 hours of sleep a night.
  • Give your child responsibilities which he is capable of taking. This allows him to earn recognition and get real satisfaction from accomplishments.
  • Establish a regular homework routine. Help him to get organized and started. Check in on him from time to time to answer any questions that arise.
  • Accept your child for who he is. Do not compare him with his sister, brother or friend. Praise your child for his effort. Effort will lead to achievement.
  • Show real interest in school. The parents’ attitude is usually the child’s. You and the teacher are partners in the important job of teaching your child. An interested, relaxed, helpful parent is a most valuable partner.

We would like to ensure that a close school-to-home communication is established and maintained. The primary method for the school to communicate with you will be through the Teleparent phone service. Throughout the year, you will receive a monthly event calendar, but in an effort to save money, all individual event notices will be through Teleparent phone calls. It is critical that the home phone number we have on file is current and working. La Colima also has a twitter account for those quick notices.

There are several ways you can communicate with the school. All teachers have voicemail and email, and although they are not interrupted during the teaching day, the policy is to return messages as soon as possible. To contact any teacher, office personnel or myself by email use the first name initial, last name @ewcsd.org. We look forward to hearing from you. Please keep in mind that parents are a vital part of the educational process. We feel that parents are our partners in the important job of educating the children of this community. The staff and I look forward to working with you and your child this year.
