SB - 250 Bill

SB 250 - PUPIL MEALS: CHILD HUNGER PREVENTION AND FAIR TREATMENT ACT OF 2017

What is SB 250?
This bill enacts the Child Hunger Prevention and Fair Treatment Act of 2017. This act ensures that a pupil whose parent or guardian has unpaid school meal fees is not shamed, treated differently, or served a meal that differs from what a pupil whose parent or guardian does not have unpaid school meal fees.

Why is this important?
Students will no longer be notified by school site food service staff in regard to their meal account. The Nutrition Services office will notify a parent or guardian of the negative balance of a pupil’s school meal account (via letter, phone or email) no later than 10 days after the pupil’s school meal account has reached a negative balance.

The goal of East Whittier City School District’s breakfast and lunch program is to provide healthy meals to children during the school day.  In order to serve healthy, high-quality meals to all children, we must make sure we are financially secure.  Parents play a key role in this effort, and are responsible for purchases made by their child in our school cafeterias.

We understand that mistakes happen. Children forget or lose their money, but meal payments are important to our program.  We offer several payment options for parents or guardian including MySchoolBucks, an online payment system.

Please contact us at Nutrition Services if you have questions at (562) 907-5950.
